Mexico is a wonderful country and a great place to live or visit.  It has a long and interesting history.  But there are probably a number of facts about Mexico you were not aware of.  Let’s discuss some of them here.

The official currency in Mexico is called the Mexican peso.  However most shops within the country are happy to accept American money as well.

Mexico is home to many beautiful and interesting birds.  It is a great place for bird watching.  There are some species of birds which don’t exist anywhere else in the world.  There are fifty different species of hummingbirds alone in the country.

Many people are aware that tequila is one of the most popular and favorite drinks in Mexico.  But did you know that this drink was in existence even before Mexico became a country?  It was distilled as far back as the 16th century.

The country is also home to many different dinosaur bones.  Hundreds of important finds have been excavated in Northern Mexico.  It is a paleontologists dream.

It is also a little known fact that if you stand in a certain location near the main pyramid in Chichen Itza, you can hear a birdlike sound.  Some researchers believe it was intentional and that the Mayan builders constructed the buildings in the area so that the wind would blow through them in a certain way and create the sound.

One of the earliest materials used to stuff baseballs came from a Mexican tree called Kapoc.  It has not leaves but produces a cotton like ball.

The first recorded convention of Astronomers took place in the Mayan city of Copan in the year 700AD.  The Mayans were extremely interested in astronomy and the stars.

One of the oldest living trees in the world exist in Mexico.  It is called the Arbol de Tule.  It is more than 40 feet tall and over 2,000 years of age!

At the El Castillo pyramid in Chichen Itza, an outline of serpent is produced during the two equinoxes during the year.  It is based on Mayan calculations and was very carefully produced.  It was extremely advanced for the time.
